July 2009 - International Ride To Work Day
CADAR bikers were pleased to beinvolved in the first real attempt to arrange
a Ride into Cambridge city centre as part of the MCIA International Ride To
Work Day.
Bikesafe and the Cambridge and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership co-ordinated
the whole event and at 08:30am, some 40 bikes set out in a police escorted convoy.
The convoy was lead by the Mayor or Cambridge and started out from the Lazy
Dayz cafe at Wimpole, along the A603, in through Barton Road and up to Gonville
Place before arriving at the Fire Station at approximately 09:00am.
Stunned onlookers saw a stream of bikes, almost 1/3 of a mile long, rumble through the streets of Cambridge, which were particularly quiet for that time of day.The press took the obligatory photo call and interviewed some of the key participants, PC Simon Burgin, Steve Merrett from the RSP and the Mayor were among the list.
The event was to promote the use of motorcycles as a congestion busting, greener and cheaper form of transport, but whilst promoting riding skills. The event has been hailed a success and next year the ambition is to get TV coverage.
